What does being a board-certified orthodontist mean?

To become an orthodontist, one must complete an accredited orthodontic program for 2-3 years after completing dental school. Some orthodontists, however, want to take their commitment to the orthodontics profession one step further and become board-certified orthodontists.

Certification by The American Board of Orthodontics is voluntary, but it signifies an orthodontist’s commitment to providing exceptional patient care. In order to become board-certified, an orthodontist must not only demonstrate skill and knowledge in the field of orthodontics but also complete rigorous written and clinical examinations.

The process to become board-certified is rigorous and thorough. First, the orthodontist must successfully complete a written examination. Once successfully completed, the orthodontist can move on to the clinical examination. During this process, the orthodontist presents case reports from practice and/or residency that demonstrate excellence in patient care. These cases are evaluated by a panel and then discussed with the applicant in an oral examination.

Board certification must be renewed every 10 years, which requires continuing education on the part of the orthodontist.

What Does Board Certification Mean To You?

Orthodontics is about much more than just straightening the teeth. It’s about understanding the complex relationship between growth, development, and facial form. Orthodontists must create smiles that are both beautiful and functional, which requires knowledge of the intricate workings of the jaw and bite, and how these relate to moving the teeth and ensuring proper facial development.

Board certification signifies a commitment to the very best in orthodontics. Only one in three orthodontists are board-certified. Completion of the certification process demonstrates a commitment to excellence in orthodontics and tells patients that the orthodontist has demonstrated the knowledge and skills to provide exceptional care.

Orthodontists are committed to creating healthy, beautiful, and properly-functioning smiles for patients of all ages. Dr. Williams is proud to be a board-certified orthodontist and is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to every patient he treats.
